Star Control II was released in 1992 and remains notable for its bold amalgam of seemingly disparate ideas. It combined space exploration, arcade combat, resource management, trading, questing and chatting with aliens in a way that suggested its creators were still eagerly discovering what a game could be. This reboot, from strategy game developer Stardock, is a mostly faithful adaptation. It delivers an expansive galaxy steeped in mystery, knowing sci-fi winks and modern interface convenience, but as a genre mashup it can at times feel shallow and the overall experience is uneven.

SimCity is a good game hobbled by its insistence on putting as many obstacles as it can between it and you. You can point to the ridiculous online connection problems that have bogged down the game’s launch as the most obvious examples of this, but they aren’t the only ones. From its online infrastructure to the simulation that powers each city, SimCity has numerous flaws that can turn a few hours of delight into a few hours of seething frustration. Many, or even most, of these flaws can be fixed, but it’s the here and now that’s important–and in the here and now, SimCity is a fun, engaging, and broken game.

Nvidia Reveals RTX 4090 And 4080 GPUs, Prices Start At $900

Nvidia has revealed its next generation of GPUs, powered by the company’s new Ada Lovelace architecture. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are both set to launch later this year, with promises of big performance improvements.

The RTX 4090 is Nvidia’s new flagship GPU, shipping with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, 76 billion transistors, and 16,384 CUDA cores. Nvidia claims that it will be able to deliver framerates higher than 100fps when gaming at 4K, all while consuming the same 450W that the RTX 3090 Ti did. Using DLSS 3, the latest version of Nvidia’s deep-learning super sampling technique, Nvidia says that the RTX 4090 sees four times more performance than the RTX 3090 Ti using DLSS 2.
